Women in the Newsroom: Breaking Male Decision-Making Power

16.11.2018

In a recent study by the European Journalism Observatory (EJO), it was revealed that, across all of the 11 countries studied, "men wrote 41% of the stories, compared to just 23% written by women, while almost half of all the pictures (43%) that were published were just of men, compared to just 15% featuring only women." The gender imbalance becomes even more prominent when one begins to look at positions of authority. How does this problem impact content, and the overall synergy of/in the newsroom? Gender Studies odsuzuje násilí na ženách na náměstí Tahrir

His Excellency
Mr. Mohamed Ibrahim Abdel Hakam
The Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt
Pelléova 14
160 00 Prague 6 - Bubeneč

Your Excellency, dear Mr. Ambassador,

women protesters standing up for their rights have faced horrific sexual violence around Cairo’s iconic Tahrir Square. The authorities have done little to stop the sexual violence or bring those responsible to justice. The current political uncertainty should not mean that the issue of sexual violence against women is ignored.

Therefore we appeal to you to adress Egypt's leaders to  condemn sexual violence in all its forms, and put in place a comprehensive plan to protect women’s rights and combat sexual violence.
